Topographic Maps

Topographic maps are different than some other types of maps, because they utilize contour lines to display a 3 dimensional image. However, they are the most general purpose maps, which is why I picked it as my first blog entry. These maps were first created in the 16th century for military use. They often contained information that was important for those in the military, yet was edited out of the civilian versions of the maps.

The contour lines are what allow the map to show elevation change on the surface the map is portraying. As you can see in the image above, the lines numbered 0-3 help to show the elevation of the mountain. While these maps can seem a bit overwhelming with the lines, they are simply there to show changes in the landscape.
