LIDAR

Source: http://www.technewsdaily.com/18375-what-is-lidar.html

LIDAR stands for LIGHT DETECTION AND RANGING. Scientists use LIDAR devices by attaching them to the bottom of aircrafts and flying over the area which they are studying. These devices work with a GPS receiver to create maps that are 3D. This is different from radar because radar devices send off radio waves. LIDAR sends off laser lights. LIDAR has been used since the 1960's, much like the rest of our technology, has been advancing over years.

The map I have included is of St. John, U.S Virgin Islands. It has created a topographic map of the area.
